Feeding the future for our koalas

Animals Wildlife Animal Welfare Posted Nov 18, 2025
Community volunteers and council are giving hope to koalas through tree planting.

On Saturday, a team of 73 volunteers, including RSPCA and Sunshine Coast Council team members, came together for a very special tree planting event at Shamley Heath Park, Kureelpa.

Rolling up their sleeves, the community effort saw approximately 1,700 eucalypts planted.

The new Kureelpa Koala Fodder Plantation means that in 3-5 years when these trees mature, sick and injured koalas at our Eumundi Rehabilitation Centre will have access to fresh food to support their recovery and rehabilitation before their return to the wild.

Sick and injured koalas can require months of rehabilitation and recovery at the RSPCA. These hungry patients require a lot of fresh leaf! Having access to fresh, nutritious leaves right on our doorstep means the highest quality nutrition for our koalas.

A special thank you to our Browse and Plantation team, along with Sunshine Coast Council for preparing the plantation site for planting!

It was a perfect day to come together and admire the community effort that is helping to support the future of our endangered species.
